I’ve been trying a number of different types of fitness apps for my phone and the latest one I’ve tried is MapMyFitness  I have to say so far of all the ones that I’ve tried this is the best by far and the best part is that it is free.  You can pay for a pro version but unless you want to link it with a couple of other apps you really don’t need to.

I do have it linked with my fitbit but that is available without the paid version.  They have other apps as well for running, walking, biking and various others…but they basically all are the same app so I just use this one.  When you start a workout with this one you can choose what type of workout you are going to do.

While you are doing your workout it will let you know when you hit the 1 mile mark and every mile after that.  It also tells you how fast you did that one and the average of all the miles.

When you are done your workout there will be a summary on your screen that will look like this.


It gives you a little information and a little of your route.  If you click on the map it will enlarge on your phone and you can view your route.  If you click on the orange rectangle the screen changes to the image below.


This shows the map of your route along with the distance and how many feet in elevation that was gained during your walk.

For a free app I don’t think you will find a better one.
